Don’t Do Me Any Favors

Let me preface this post by stating that I didn’t create it to win friends, but rather to discuss the truth.

Each morning I take a seat on the late Dr. J. Vernon McGee’s Bible Bus, and for 30 minutes I listen to him explain the Word of God to a worldwide audience. This man says something profound just about every day. Today was no exception. “The basic weakness today of liberalism is its aim to please the natural man without telling him the truth about his fatal disease.”

There. I quoted it. Someone had to.

The problem with most churches today is that they do not teach the Word of God. They do, however, have great playgrounds, fantastic music, libraries, buffets and all sorts of children’s activities. Thom S. Rainer, president and CEO of LifeWay Christian Resources, sent out a poll last year to see what people thought were the most important qualities in a pastor. Number one was, “Love of congregation. If we know that our pastor loves us, everything else falls in place. If he doesn’t, nothing else matters.” In other words, he should be agreeable.

Ugh. Gag me.

Devotion to speaking the truth, true to the whole Word of God, should be the first priority of any Christian teacher. Course, this won’t help win any popularity contests. There are, after all, many passages in the Word of God that are a bit hard to swallow.

But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. Romans 2:8

But if we aren’t taught the full message from God, how will we understand the extent to which we have fallen from His grace, and thus, require His mercy to regain our place in Heaven? Worse than cancer, sin will forever torment us if we do not seek forgiveness.

The thing is, there are too many people who do not know this. A teacher of the Word of God who skims over, or entirely leaves out, portions of the Bible just to avoid controversy and hurt feelings amongst their congregation isn’t doing anyone any favors. He or she is spiritually failing the parish. Think of it this way. If a medical doctor purposely failed to disclose all known information pertaining to a patient’s particular case they would be accused of criminal negligence.

We all want to feel good about ourselves; no one wants to hear that from conception we were born sinful, or that just by looking at another woman lustfully you have committed adultery. It is human nature to seek out and surround ourselves with those who make us feel good. Unfortunately, we often find this source of refuge in the form of church. But, church isn’t supposed to be a yes-man. It is supposed to be a place where sinners can learn how to place their sins on the table of Christ: by repenting, letting go, trusting and asking for forgiveness.

Roses and sunshine won’t save your soul. Only the truth will set you free.

At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He save us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, who he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. Titus 3: 3-7

  1. Preach it sister!
I don’t think we have genuine love for others if we don’t speak truth to them. Or, we don’t really believe what the Bible say.
